We have an agenda of getting together to enjoy reconnecting, good food, sharing our good times and bad. I did not mean to be critical. You are the one who had the initiative to bring up the issue, and I appreciate it. Regarding the lack of response, there are lots of people who do not attend to their emails nearly as often as you and I do. I think that you will get more response with a little more time. And a couple of hearty reminders. Regarding the number who want to get together this year sometime, I have been to at least three of the "smaller" gatherings held since our 40th Reunion, and enjoyed them immensely. Drawing only 15 or 20 people may make an event both more manageable and more intimate. Thank you for starting the discussion, so the rest of us can throw in our two cents. I don't know what we would do without you. So cold that the buckets of water I had in my little room where I rest in between checking the ewes, had a cover of ice on them. ( I have the buckets of water to water the ewe after I bring her and her lambs into the jug barn where they 'mother-up') I am done until the first week of March. Thank goodness 2 nights were over 25 degrees below zero!! Ish!! that is COLD. We do not have snow like you do. Right now I have about 6 inches on the ground and there is no way to be quiet walking on it because it cracks with every step! One gets pretty strong walking in the snow..I cannot imagine walking threw it. I guess that is what is called 'power walking' hahha. I have a crew of sheep shearers coming Tuesday. The barns are ready with a special vitamin/mineral lick to help keep them warm. It takes them about 7 days to adjust. Lots of food too! The reason for the shearing is so that the lamb can find the udder and so the ewe will feel that it is cold and not just have her young out in the open. It got up to 36 today and compared to the last 4 frigid days, it felt like heaven. In addition, the poll said to pick only 2 and I wanted to choose several. I agree with Jack that we should plan at least one event every year, possibly to coincide with the Oldtimers' Picnic or the Alumni Picnic, with a separate dinner or barbecue the night before. I also think that should not prevent us from scheduling other get-togethers like at Kermit's, Don and Peggy's, or anywhere else we can, if possible. We will never select a date that is available for everyone, so if there are 2 or 3 gatherings a year, we might get a better turnout over all. Basically, it is my feeling that we renewed a lot of old connections 3 1/2 years ago, and if we don't keep them going, we may lose them. I would hate to see that happen. Our reunion meant a lot to me, and I would like to keep those friendships active and thriving. I, for one, will try to make any of the events that are planned, to the best of my ability. Can anyone attend???What to bring?) and the Alumni Association Picnic, as well as the date of the FUHS Homecoming Game. It might be easier, for those friends who have to travel to attend, to be able to plan ahead and combine a smaller gathering for '64 classmates and friends in the same time frame. I know many of you know these "fixed" gathering dates, but some of us do not know. Also, will there be a planning committee for the 45th, and when do they begin planning for that "larger" event? Are there "notes" from the 40th that would assist in planning the 45th? Does anyone have "snail mail" addresses as well? I think that's another way to reach others, send "Save the Date" cards, etc...Email is great, but not the only way...Seeing you, hearing your stories, sharing your joys and sorrows and the life lessons we've learned...PRICELESS!!! Doug was so right when he said you are a special group of people...incredible! I have several friends who are event planners, so I'm offering to assist planning some of these gatherings, if that would be helpful or wanted. However, I'm in La Mesa, and am not familiar with the current facilities in Fallbrook. Is there any interest in an informal get-together on a Sunday, for example, to meet at a restaurant either in Fallbrook or San Marcos or Escondido to share a meal and just talk? It would be good to have an idea of the number of people planning to attend. I think an "official" 45th reunion would be awesome, but also smaller gatherings on a semi-regular basis would be awesome! I have no clue how the financial plan worked for the 40th...was enough money collected or did someone get stuck paying more? Jack, how much are you paying for this service you provide for us? Donations needed??? Any interest in creating a "Scrapbook" of memories since graduation? Hoping the interest in re-connecting continues... Guess it's time for a football game... South of Town and Up the River By Carolyn Schroeder (Wildflower) The season of lambing and calving is upon us or quickly will be. It is a good thing to have scheduled beginning birthing dates based on the breeding times; but if the bull or buck had an unscheduled fling in June, July or August, well, that is not a good thing. Much to my dismay and horror that is what happened to me. It was a blistering hot day, August 29th, my gorgeous, and I thought contented big bad boy bucks were grazing in there designated pasture and all was well. Hours later that same day, while working in the barnyard I saw those same delinquent bad boys with the ewes. There noses were high in the air sniffing for goodies. I freaked! There date with the girls was not on the calendar until October 10th. It took over an hour, but I got them out, put them in a secure corral and marked this date on the calendar. Five months minus five days later I scheduled myself for what I like to call 'pre-lambing.' By the fifteenth of January I was ready. The jugs were put together, alfalfa and grain were in place along with two round bales of straw, medicine, docking and castrating bands were purchased also CD&T serum, supplements, paint, lamb jackets and scissors were all in order. My little room that I stay in during the night was complete with cot and blankets, clock, crock pot and heater. I was prepared, I was ready, bring it on! On the night of January 25th, I brought the flock in and started my week of night lambing. Every 2 hours the alarm would blast in my ears, up I would get, put on extra cloths and out I'd go to check the girls. With each trudging I would say a silent prayer, 'Oh Lord! Please let there be NO lambs!' It was too dang cold! I was prepared to have between 10 and 30 ewes lamb out, but much to my surprise and delight there was only one on the 3rd. night. A fine set of twins too. By the time I got to them they already had icicles on there legs. Yes sir re that was it; seven nights in the barn and only one drop. I must have noticed the bucks with the ewes just as they got there, thank-goodness. Two of the nights were double digits below zero; it was so cold in my little room (even with the heater) that the buckets of water that I had for a new birthed mother, froze on top. This episode of 'pre-lambing' was something new for me, but without a doubt not for most all others that have livestock and an errant buck or bull. I learned my lesson in regards to making sure the fences are secure. A flimsy fence will not hold back the call of mom nature. Hats off to those that schedule birth in January and February burr, I prefer March, April or May! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jean Thompson" To: Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2008 6:31 PM Subject: Re: [Fallbrook64] Settled - Target dates for August 2-3 > Carolyn ?? how do i find your story??? jeannie > > Wildflower wrote: > Oh Wow!!!
