Patricia, Regarding Wild Animal Park. ... I have heard that the animals are ok, some endangered species were moved out, but others were still there, and unharmed. So far, the Zoo, and Sea World are in no danger. The Google map shows, and the news reports say nothing about Live Oak park burning, BUT we have had some unverified reports say that it is burning. Right now, I prefer to believe it is not, until I know for certain, because the reports are unverified. I spoke to Kermit on his way home from work, before evacuation. I have not heard anything since from Kermit, but I suspect that Patricia and Kermit, and the rest of their family are ok. ... Kermit and Patricia have many animals, three dogs, a couple cats, and four big birds, as well as a smaller bird, to take care of, so I am 100% positive they are very busy. Rachel (FUHS '94) lives east of the Lawrence Welk Resort in Hidden Meadows. She and her husband were evacuated around 5:30 this morning.? They're about 7 miles from I15 and there's only one narrow way out.? She just delivered her first baby on Thursday; luckily, they're safe in Irvine.? Her in-laws live off Gird Road near the golf course and they evacuated yesterday afternoon.? My brother Mike reminded me that Fallbrook was almost evacuated in '67 or '68 when he was a volunteer at the Fallbrook Fire Dept.? I think the fire that year was coming in from De Luz and evacuations would have been ordered 15 minutes later if the fire line hadn't held.? I've been monitoring the CHP website when I can get on it(http://cad.chp.ca.gov/); there's a lot of incident lines for the Fallbrook fire -- the CHP along with all the other emergency personnel are stretched so thin.? I think that's one reason why some are able to get back into the evacuation areas.? There's closures around Valley Center, Pala, and so much territory to cover in the North County. Google Maps shows that the Fallbrook evacuees were sent to the El Toro High School as their shelter; I don't think there's much available from San Clemente north until El Toro.? I pray that the winds die down soon and that no more lives will be lost. All the animals are taking all the moving very well. After we got our reverse 911 call we went to my sisters house on Monday at 1400. She got her call abt 1730 and we had to move again to friends of theirs in Deluz heights right above Daley lake. We spent the night there - had a good dinner and a little wine, very little sleep. At 0400 reports on TV started talking abt the fire breaking out in Fallbrook. At 0730 they got their 911 call and we were off again this time to Corona. On our way out we had water heliocopters fly right over the top of us and dropping water just to the right of our path on Rancho California Rd. We made it to Temecula and took I 15 to corona. We will probably stay here until the mandatory evacuation is lifted for Fallbrook. Will keep in touch as I can. Kermit Jack Foster Mancilla > . > > Patricia, > > Regarding Wild Animal Park. ... Homes all around them have burned to the ground, including one in a flare up yesterday. Please keep up the prayers as we are not out of this yet. Cindi and I are fine with our evacuation order just lifted for Carlsbad. No one in San Diego is thinking about much except survival and friends and family at this point. Schools all closed. All theatre performances were cancelled. Malls, churches and sports venues cancelled their regular activities to become shelters. Both major north/south freeways have been closed at different times in the past two days. Trains are not running into OC. Though our home has not been fire-touched, everything from grass, to cars, to the dog are covered in heavy soot. Most of the stores in our area were closed the past two days including our pharmacy and those who are out are few and well masked. Even Starbucks was closed! It is very emotional looking at aerial photographs of some of the neighbohoods where I have sold homes in the past 12 years and the damage there. Local media and fire fighter coverage has been excellent but with the nine fires so widely scattered, they can't see everything and Fallbrook has been the red-headed step child in that regard. With any disaster of this size you cannot prepare for it in any way that makes sense. It really gets down to the individual level. We were surprised at how a little list of things to take grew into something that took us hours to prepare. Simple things like removing our computer (just the tower), shutting off the gas, how to control the dog in a shelter, we would not have thought of but for the information provided by the local news channels. They went to a no-commercial, all news format, which proved extraordinarily helpful. More later. There are ten houses there and he is the only one left at this time. The fire came within 1 mile and they evacuated on Monday. Luckily he works for Metropolitan Water District and they let him use one of their emergency vehicles so he could manuver the back roads and get past the Police road blocks. The police would only let emergency vehicles through. Jerry and his wife packed as many valuable items, hooked up their travel trailer and drove back to Hemet to the water district where they stayed securely protected. It is so sad to see all this happening and I'm pleased that you sent an email. I now live in Denver, Co and when I have more time, I will update everyone on my life as it is today with two great grandkids. Oh by the way, I changed my last name to the original Norwegian spelling of Follstad to Follestad in 1985. Take care of yourself! Me? I am fine. Just watching the Rice fire, and the other fires that are hitting so many people. ... I have been impressed by the quality of human response. ... one million people evacuated, and cared for. Everyone deserves a great pat on the back, and a good hug. But, then I think that this trouble is only for a few days. What if it had been something really terrible that wiped out a whole community? Forty-five thousand people were evacuated from Fallbrook, and 500 homes were wiped out in the Fallbrook area. ... What if all the homes in Fallbrook were burnt to the ground, as awful as that sounds, it was quite possible this past few days. Or a big chunk of San Diego was made uninhabitable? Yet, those would still be small events. ... The Christmas tsunami did more damage. Many more people were killed on 9/11. San Diego County has a Billion dollars damage. What of Katrina? We are still dealing with refugees from New Orleans. What would we really do with a million, two million or more, refugees if the roads were unnavigable, cell phones down? How could we even feed or water them? What would we have done if it were some sort of structured attack, like some in a specific network has suggested, with some sort of horrific followup? Car bombs at the points of evacuation, sending people running in all directions. I could easily take this line of thought much further, but the real question is what would we do if the damage was so large as to be unfathomable? How could we even feed or water them? What would we have done if it were some sort of structured attack, like some in a specific network has suggested, with some sort of horrific followup? My youngest brother lives off Reche Road near Mertle Creek Nursery and has not gotten back in his home but we know all is well there. My Mom was not as fortunate. She lived in Valley Oaks Mobile Home Park where her home was destroyed. She lived in a custom home on the back side of the park along Tecolote. Because of the road closings we have not been able to get back in to dig through the ashes to see what we can find. She is safe and was in the hospital last week because on Monday she had back surgery. We had to tell her on Tuesday her home was gone. Fortunately we all live close enough she has a place to stay until she decides what she wants to do. I know Bill Ahrend and his daughter lived in the same park and I've heard both of their homes are gone.
